Ring of Regeneration
The Legend of William OhRing of Regeneration is a relic whose practical value lies in turning recovery into an ongoing mechanical advantage: while equipped, it makes the user heal significantly faster, with the effect scaling with Resistance. Its usefulness is therefore both bodily and strategic, especially for Climbers whose survival depends on returning to action after injury, but the ring is not cost-free. It imposes a -7 Focus penalty and carries a daily Charge penalty, making regeneration another resource to manage rather than an unconditional miracle.
Properties and Costs
The System identifies the item as Ring of Regeneration and records its principal effect as significantly faster healing for an equipped user. The benefit scales with Resistance, tying the relic’s performance to the wearer’s attributes rather than treating recovery as a fixed result. The ring thus belongs to the broader logic of relic equipment, in which an object’s power is inseparable from the rules governing its use.
Its listed drawback is equally concrete: the ring costs 7 Focus and applies a daily Charge penalty. That combination makes the item powerful but demanding. Faster healing can shorten the time spent incapacitated, while reduced Focus and recurring Charge loss limit what the wearer can do elsewhere. The ring’s value is consequently measured through trade-offs, not through a simple distinction between useful and useless equipment.
Discovery and Fitting
The Ring of Regeneration is examined during a review of recovered rings. Loth recognizes the healing effect and remarks on the daily Charge penalty while comparing it with another ring already being worn. The inspection treats the relic as both treasure and equipment: its properties must be read, its penalties considered, and its place in an existing build decided.
Changing rings is physically painful. Loth’s Ring of the Wolf Pack had become surrounded by scar tissue after heat seared the previous ring into her skin and the wound was hastily healed. She tears it off despite the damage, visibly experiencing pain even though she appears largely unaffected by it. The Ring of Regeneration is then slipped onto a different finger, while the removed Ring of the Wolf Pack is pocketed for later handling.
Tactical Significance
The ring’s importance comes from the way it changes the interval between injury and renewed action. In a climbing environment, recovery is not merely a medical concern: it affects how quickly a Party can resume travel, combat, and other objectives. The Ring of Regeneration therefore converts Resistance into a continuing survival resource, while its Focus and Charge costs force the wearer to balance endurance against immediate capability.
Its operation also shows how the System governs the relationship between people and objects. The ring does not heal through an unexplained act of benevolence; it provides a defined effect under specified conditions, and the user must accept the attached penalties. Loth’s examination makes the relic’s material presence unavoidable: its power is useful only after someone removes another ring, bears the pain of doing so, and chooses where the new item will be worn.
